03

Can Evil Eye see what's on my screen?

Absolutely not, Apple does not allow this.

04

Help, my addiction is just too strong! 😭

To keep you as addicted as possible, most social media platforms are literally built with the constant help of gambling machine experts...

We get it.

Although we would love for Evil Eye to work on the most server addiction cases, sometimes we get people who are just too deep in... People who have 12 - 14 hour screen times on a good day, and walk around with a solar powered power bank just incase.

If that's you, we recently designed a new feature where you invite a trust buddy whom you would be embarrassed by if they knew how much time you spend on social media every day.

After one hour of your daily allocated social media use, they will be notified every time you open the app. Not only is this very annoying for your buddy, it will also be quite embarrassing for you.

You won't be able to lie anymore. They will tell you to get a life, you'll feel horrible and change will be your only option.

This harsh feature is designed for the most severe cases, try at your own risk.

05

Why not just use Apple's screen time feature?

You wouldn't be here if it worked.

🤳🏽 Balanced Social Media Usage

I created Evil Eye to stop myself from opening Instagram and Twitter without proper intention.

The effects were much stronger than I anticipated initially: instead of only impacting my behavior in the short term, Evil Eye changed my phone usage patterns sustainably!

After using Evil Eye for more than two weeks I noticed that I completely lost interest in checking Instagram or Twitter just for the sake of it.

💡Friction added by Evil Eye makes opening social media much more “painful”. Social media apps are not the feel-good oasis of instant gratification anymore – and your brain will adapt: Social media is not a viable option to escape from your problems anymore.

In the end, I have the feeling that I can finally use social media how I want, and not feel used by these platforms – much more balanced and much healthier.I conducted a study together with the Max-Planck Institute and University of Heidelberg to analyze the effects of Evil Eye on its users. We discovered a reduction of app-usage by 57%! You can learn more about our study here.

🎰 Reduced Gambling

Gambling apps can be a tempting and easy way to cope with stress and other difficult emotions. For some people, they can become a form of dysfunctional coping, allowing them to avoid dealing with the underlying issue while still providing a false sense of relief.

Unfortunately, this can lead to the development of a gambling addiction and a dangerous cycle of increasing losses and attempts to win back money. To reduce the risk of developing a gambling addiction, it's important to understand the risks associated with gambling apps and to practice proper self-care techniques when dealing with difficult and stressful situations.

Evil Eye can help you to become more aware of such coping-mechanisms, by forcing you to reflect before you can open such apps.

🌮 Order less food

The convenience of having restaurant-quality meals delivered to your door is hard to resist. Those who are regularly ordering takeout are missing out on the satisfaction of preparing meals from scratch, not to mention the added cost to their wallets. To break the habit, it's important to set a budget for ordering food and stick to it. Cooking meals at home can help save money and provide a more nutritious diet. Additionally, planning out meals ahead of time can help reduce the temptation to order food. Adding friction with Evil Eye in front of such apps can help to reflect and think about what you could cook yourself at home.Taking the time to cook delicious meals can be a rewarding experience, and with a little practice, anyone can do it.

💰 Prevent Impulse Purchases

Many people impulsively spend money online on apps and websites, buying things they don't actually need. Shopping can be an attractive way to fill the void of boredom or unhappiness, but it doesn't help to solve the underlying issues. Instead, it can lead to feelings of guilt or regret afterwards due to wasted money. It is better to take a step back, recognize the impulse, and find healthier ways to cope with the emotion.

And this is where my app Evil Eye steps in: by adding friction in front of apps where you know you’re spending money from time to tome (online shopping, food delivery, in-app purchases), you give yourself time to reflect. And these 10 additional seconds can help change your mind – to save money, and to do something that’s gonna be healthy for you long-term!

🍑 Adult Content Detox

Decreasing adult content consumption can have a profound effect on mental health, life quality, and relationships. When content of this kind is consumed, it can fuel unhealthy behaviors, reduce empathy, and lead to feelings of guilt and shame. By reducing adult content consumption, individuals can reduce negative feelings associated with it, allowing for a more positive outlook on life. Increased self-esteem and self-confidence can lead to improved relationships, as well as improved mental health.

The app Evil Eye can provide a comprehensive solution to decreasing adult content consumption. It can block porn sites in all web browsers on your phone and can even lock you out of changing that setting back later on. This means that individuals can choose to take a break from adult content without worrying about making changes to their settings later. This feature can help individuals make a commitment to decreasing their adult content consumption, allowing them to focus on more meaningful and beneficial activities that can lead to improved mental health, relationships, and life quality.

⚡️ ADHD Relief

Many people who struggle with inattention and hyperactivity notice a link between their symptoms and the amount of time they spend in front of a screen.

Research suggests that brains of people with ADHD show low levels of neurotransmitters. Those are called dopamine, serotonin, epinephrine or norepinephrine and are responsible for transferring information inside the brain. When they’re missing, stimuli can’t be properly filtered. The person gets easily distracted by new stimuli and finds it hard to stick to one thing.

Electronic devices with their action-packed visuals, quick motions, bright colors and sounds grab our attention and send a lot of dopamine to our brains. It’s not surprising that children with ADHD love screen time – it keeps them focused.

Users of Evil Eye confirm that there’s definitely a link between those two:

"Almost as soon as I don't spend so much time on the internet, my capabilities slowly come back to me.

[...] the more screen time the worse my adhd symptoms are so reducing it does help a lot even without other treatment."

🙏🏽 Mental Health

It is no secret: social media is stresses our mental health. Reducing time spent on social media will automatically make you feel better (and vice versa).

There are many reasons why social media is bad for mental health

- using social media as dysfunctional coping mechanism to escape from our emotions
- people are not honest: they present an artificial, best-moment version of themselves
- likes, content, views offer instant gratification: they are designed to make you addicted

👩🔬It comes to no surprise, that science has actually proof that lowering time spent on social media improves your wellbeing significantly!

Julia Brailovskaia, Fabienne Ströse, Holger Schillack and Jürgen Margraf, psychologists from German University of Bochum, recently published a paper called “Less Facebook use – More well-being and a healthier lifestyle? An experimental intervention study”, the outcome of reducing daily Facebook use by 20min was astonishing:

"The intervention reduced active and passive Facebook use, Facebook use intensity, and the level of Facebook Addiction Disorder. Life satisfaction significantly increased, and depressive symptoms significantly decreased. Moreover, frequency of physical activity such as jogging or cycling significantly increased, and number of daily smoked cigarettes decreased. Effects remained stable during follow-up."

Do you need any other reason to reduce social media usage?

🛏️ Sleep Better

Smartphone usage has been linked to decreased sleep quality. The bright screens of our phones can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate our sleep-wake cycles. Additionally, the content on our phones can be stimulating, making it more difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

To ensure a better quality of sleep, consider creating a for certain apps for evening hours. And make sure you have Apple’s feature enabled, to reduce the blue light coming from your screen!

📺 Watch less TV Shows

Netflix addiction is an increasingly pervasive problem, with people spending more time watching shows and movies than ever before. This can have a significant impact on their mental health, relationships and day-to-day life. Netflix addiction can be especially damaging to young people, who are more likely to become addicted, and struggle to break the habit.

Adding extra friction before opening Netflix can help us to pause and reflect on our decision to watch a show. It can also make the app less interesting and desirable, reducing our urge to watch it in the first place. This can be a powerful tool for those struggling with their Netflix addiction, and help to break the cycle of binge watching.

❤️ More Family Time

Spending less time on social media can lead to better and more quality family time in a number of ways:

Firstly, reducing screen time can directly increase the quantity of time available for family interactions, enhancing the possibility of more shared experiences and activities.

Secondly, it can improve the quality of these interactions, with individuals being more mentally and emotionally present without the constant distractions and interruptions of social media notifications.

Lastly, it provides opportunities for more meaningful conversations and deeper connections, as family members learn more about each other outside the boundaries of curated online personas. Overall, a decrease in social media usage may foster a healthier and more intimate family environment.

Enabling healthier relationships with social media

You just wanted to check that one message – and ended up scrolling on Instagram for 1 hour? Social media is designed to keep you hooked to spend as much time as possible. Time that could be spent so much better – with your family and friends, getting work done or for your hobbies and wellbeing.

I got tired of this, and built a private app to share with my loved ones. It received such positive feedback that I made it public and called it Evil Eye - after the 5,000 year old symbol people put above their door to protect them from evil. 🧿

Evil Eye works on 8,000+ apps
